A Triumph of Tradition and Togetherness: The 32nd USTMAAA Grand Reunion and Medical Convention

By Dionisio B. Yorro, Jr., MD, FACC, Executive Director, USTMAAA

The 32nd Grand Reunion and Clinical Convention of the USTMAAA was a resounding success, thanks to the visionary leadership of organizers Dr. Zita Yorro and Dr. Stella Evangelista. Held at the O’Hare Hyatt Hotel in Chicago, this four-day event drew Thomasians from across the United States and the Philippines.

The Opening Ceremonies, sponsored by the USTMAA Midwest Chapter, led by their President, Dr. Raffy Castro, carried profound historical significance. As the birthplace of USTMAAA itself, Chicago welcomed attendees with the warm pride of tradition. The local chapter’s dedication set a tone of unity and celebration that echoed throughout the entire convention. Honored were the First President of the USTMAAA, the late Dr. Rodrigo Floro, and the first President of the USTMAAA Foundation, Dr. Gregorio Tolentino.

A defining highlight was the record-breaking attendance of younger generations. Many Continuing Medical Education (CME) speakers were second-generation graduates of the University of Santo Tomas, showcasing not only professional excellence but also a legacy of achievement passed down through families. This vibrant presence heralded a bright future for the organization.

Families had their moment in the spotlight during the enchanting Children's Fashion Show. Grandparents beamed with pride as their grandchildren charmed the crowd with their poise and personality, adding a heartwarming touch to the festivities. Meanwhile, the Jubilarian classes embraced their moment of recognition, marching with flair during the Hawaiian Luau and dazzling with talent at the Gala Night.

The Gala Night also served as a platform for the ceremonial triple induction of officers for the USTMAAA, the Foundation, and the USTMAA Midwest Chapter. Applause erupted as the Most Outstanding Jubilarians—chosen by their classmates—and the USTMAAA Most Outstanding Thomasians were formally honored, shining a spotlight on exceptional contributions across generations.

Adding further distinction to the event were esteemed guests from the Philippines, including Rev. Fr. Julius Factora, CEO of UST Hospital; Dr. Charito Malong Consolacion, UST Hospital’s Medical Director; and Dr. Minerva Calimag, President of USTMAA Philippines. Their presence underscored the deep, ongoing connection between the international Thomasian community and its roots in Manila.

This Grand Reunion wasn’t just an event—it was a vibrant reaffirmation of legacy, leadership, and love for alma mater. And under the guidance of the event organizers, it became a moment that will be cherished by generations to come.
